Local heroes / Laughing stock SAXON, the barnsley/rotherham heavy metal band full of celebrity look alikes and pals of Elton John.
Are playing the City Hall soon. And there is an advert for it in the paper today. They all look extremely wizened and old. Biff looks like he could be the next actor to play Gandalf the wizard, he has long grey hair and appears to be about 70. And some of the other lads look even older with amusingly shaped goatee beardage and bandanas covering their bald heads.
While it is cool to be ancient and play blues music, like Howlin' Wolf, will it ever be cool to be a pensioable Metal Band?
Although some of their song lyrics fit old biddies exactly, what with memories of steam trains, and presidential assasinations which happend 53 years ago when my pensioner dad was still at school.

I think Maiden are getting pretty close to being pensionable, and Lemmy definitely is, so I think it is possible to be cool and and a metal gimmer at the same time. The problem with Saxon is that, even in their heyday, they were highly ludicrous, making them now appear like dozy old duffers in fancy dress. On a similar note, I saw a poster for the Anti-Nowhere League last night: 'camp' does not do them justice...
